Cafferty is the man - just in general. He's what I hope to be someday, a cranky old man who speaks his mind regardless!
Nice time line of War on Drugs
Good history lesson

Abe Lincoln
In arguing against the concept of prohibition through legislation, Abraham Lincoln expressed his opposition to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1840: "Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."
- Abraham Lincoln (1809-65) U.S. President.
Speech, 18 Dec. 1840, to Illinois House of Representatives.

QOTW answer: ER ...
ReplyDeleteand iowa struck down the states same-sex marriage ban four days before vermont legalized same-sex marriages ...
and i heart jack cafferty.
O.K. I don't agree with gay marriage and the reason isn't what most of you would think. I could care less if Adam wants to cornhole Steve. I don't care if they want to wear rings and live together and call each other sissy little pet names. Hell, I don't even mind if that couple wants to adopt a baby (lord knows we have enough orphans who could do alot worse than grow up with 2 loving parents no matter the gender). My problem here is the adjustment of government in order to suit a minor percentage of the population. That is what is wrong with our government right now. Political Correctness. If you try to make everyone happy, nobody ends up happy except the people in control.
ReplyDeleteI think the argument will be mute anyway. The big issue with gay marriage is the sharing of health insurance. If the Democrats get their way, everyone will be covered anyway.
I know I put Mute instead of moot. I did that on purpose because I want America to shut their traps about issues involving a certain people and not the country as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI totally lied just now. I really just did use the wrong word. You almost believed me, though. I know what you're thinking. "Gee, Parker, you are so smooth and sexy, I might just have to kill myself for not being worthy". And it's true, but I don't want that blood on my hands.
Joy wins! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteHealth benefits are a big thing, but so are things like the death tax, there are custody problems with kids, etc... Some of the issues can't be cleared up with anything but marriage. (Let me say again that I'm far from an expert. (And I totally believed you!))
ReplyDeleteParker said "My problem here is the adjustment of government in order to suit a minor percentage of the population."
ReplyDeleteI agree that you cannot make everyone happy, but if we hadn't changed government policy for minor percentages, there would still be separate but equal going on (even though there still is!). It would just be more prevalent. IF the current administration doesn't stop trying to make everyone happy, we'll be screwed... but saying one group cannot do what other groups can is fundamentally wrong and un-American.
With the condition the country, and even the world, maybe the focus shouldn't be on a civil issue. The federal government should be concerned with one thing to me........The Economy and maybe infrastructure. Maybe, since we've been making federal cases over the war on drugs and gay marriage, we missed the fact that the economy was fucked 10+ years ago and we're just figuring it out now. Let the states decide if they want to recognise gay marriage and those couples will just migrate if it is all that important to them. That way the people that live in that state would actually get the say in the issue. A true democracy. Government mandate of anything is never the answer.
ReplyDeleteThe world is full of problems large and small. Ignoring any doesn't help. The government are the ones making an issue out of gay marriage when it shouldn't be, not the people. Marriage is a religious ceremony. Letting Adam and Steve just go to justice and be done with it would be all the same to them. I understand the points of Parker, but there are flaws to this argument. Government shouldn't mandate that states don't:
ReplyDeletehang black people, traffick humans, steal each others identity, murder people, open each others mail, or any other federal / capital offense.
Some states just wouldn't care about certain crimes. It's not so easy for people to "just migrate" from state to state to find a place that will treat them how all states should. Is the podcast a gay rights-pushing agenda machine? Do John and Dave just want this that bad?
Whaddup ANNON??!?!?!?! Warmongering much?
ReplyDeleteUs humans love our problems. No wonder that garden of Eden didn't work.
I am a big supporter of state's rights, our federal government should stay out of the debate. So far as gay marriage, they have stayed out. Bush tried to support a constitutional amendment against gay marriage, but it didn't get very far.
And I'm really starting to dislike politicians in general.
And, health insurance IS the big issue!
TRUTH. Government IS the problem, not the solution to our problems. Gay people want their voices to be heard. I have no problem with that, as long as their voices are part of the voting majority. Do you think the residents of Utah would be at all happy with legalizing gay marraige in their "Mormon State"? No. But if we cater to what the gay people of Utah may want, we are completely ignoring what the Majority of that state wants. Now, I'm just using Utah as an example because for some reason I feel like it might be the most religious state. I'm sure there are plenty of states where the majority wants nothing to do with gay marriages. If we ignore what the majority wants, we are ignoring democracy and state's right to choose. We shouldn't Ignore the issue of gay marriage. Every state should vote on it. Hell, I would even say let every state that voted it down Re-vote every 5 to 10 years to see it there has been a change of heart. At least that way the important part is still involved and that is "Democracy".
ReplyDeleteAs far as what ANON wants the Federal government to control....don't be rediculous. How can you even equate hanging black people with not allowing gays to be married? "Oh they are so repressed. We won't let them have a stupid paper saying they were married under god and before state. That's way worse than being strung up a tree and killed!!!!!" Come on. Not even in the same state let alone the same ballpark. Not letting gays marry does no physical harm to anybody unlike hanging blacks, trafficking humans for sex or murder. That sound like someone is grabbing at straws.
Parker...did you forget we our government only believes in democracy in theory? They like talking about how great democracy is but as we all know the majority never really matters in how the country is ran, its about what a relative few rich bastards want and think is best for the public that decide what is best. Also depends on who has more money and can buy what they want. It's really too bad this country has pretty much become what our founding fathers did not want. We are being "represented" by a bunch of greedy, money grubbing people that don't care about what the majority want. I use to care about gay marriage and be very opinionated about the issue, but who cares if they gays have a piece of paper to make them happy. Comparing gay marriage to hanging blacks....WTF!? How does that even compare?
ReplyDeleteRight. And petty little issues like these are thrown out there to separate the masses so they can control us. Who cares who can get married when a handfull of bankers are destroying the economy and taking this country down the way no army has been able to do.
