What are the consequences of consuming "diet" or "light" products? (Tests in lab rats show addiction, cancer, but only in ridiculously large amounts. The flawed logic in this argument is stunning)

  1. John has had 5. For some reason I remembered that you talked about that on the last episode which was under 1 hour.

  3. Dave, try Skippy Natural PB. It's the best dang PB ever! People really need to read labels more often. I was thinking to myself that if I had a box of cereal from like 10 years ago, what would be the major change in the ingrediants. Salad dressings are the worse when it comes to low-fat has too much sugar. Sugar and salad dressing just don't mix in my world. Bleck.

Back on the label reading thing and why it's important. I made a couple of loaves a few weeks back and just followed the recipe in my cookbook. Well, I wasn't using regular flour, but self-rising. The loaves came out kind of salty, so I tried again with less salt. When I went to go buy more of that flour, I read the label like I normally do when shopping. Ding, freaking salt already in there! That's why people should read labels.

  5. Someone needs to start a Facebook fan site called "Becoming a 'fan' of stuff on facebook to piss off John Rimer". Then, we can all be fans of becoming a fan of stuff to piss him off. I would do it, but I don't know how. Dave, you are totally smart so you should do it.

  6. I know that John used to be a big G.I. Joe fan and I just watched the new trailer for the movie coming out this summer. It looks like crap. I was really excited when it was announced, but now I don't think I want to see it. I just might wait for the DVD. They have ruined a storied franchise. HollyWood strikes again.

  7. I am a fan of becoming a fan on facebook... Dave can you make this happen? Johnny let me just tell you I am jealous and want to be heading to Cali this weekend too. With that said, what is going to happen with this weekend's show? When can I expect it?

  8. You can call be cool and become a fan of as many obviously liked things as you want. We will still be doing the show while I'm in California. I plan on getting up early Sunday morning and recording it, so it should be up in the afternoon. I loved G.I. Joe and also will never watch that movie. I am sick of Hollywood's lack of originality and destroying of great things that don't need re-made. Another example: Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Will Smith's kid... ridiculous.

  9. You talked about me and said nice things and it was awesome....and all I had to do was text you guys an obnoxious comment! Thanks guys!

BTW - owning a home is awesome. If you live in a place where you can earn equity and actually use it as an investment then it's a lot different than renting. If you live in a place where there's no jobs and you hate your life and don't want to live there - probably not the best place to buy a house. I hated Pittsburgh...still do and I'll never move back. I love the people back home but there was nothing there for me anymore and I needed out. Now we're in NC and it's great. We've already earned $50k in equity in a year - during the worst of the housing bubble! So yes, for some folks renting is best....I've got friends in Australia that are pretty sure they'll never be able to buy a house and that's just how things are nowadays. Unfortunately that may become the trend here as well...but it's all about living within your means. Not getting a mortgage that you have to put a portion of it on a credit card. There's so much more to all of this, but oh well...

  10. I agree with Jonathan above about the owning a house. Although I have never owned a house myself, I really want to have one. As of right now Jess and I are going to be renting, but when we both have jobs in an area that we are going to probably be staying at for a long period of time, I can definitely see us owning. I just like the idea of having the house for myself and knowing that if I want to do something, I can (ex. painting). I also would like to know that I can have a pet because as of right now, the apartment that Jess is living in does not allow this.
Dave and John, I just want to say thanks for doing this! I don't know why I waited so long to get into your podcasts, but now that I have listened to all of them in four days, I don't know what to do with myself. I can't wait for the next one!

  11. So, I too own a house, so I should probably put my two cents in. Nick is right. I like the fact that I can have my dogs. I like the fact that I was able to put up a fence in my back yard to keep said dogs happy and raise my property value at the same time. I also agree with Jonathan. Owning a house is only the right option for you if you are happy with your station in life, especially with the way the market is right now. The only bad stuff that comes with owning a house begins with the phrase "What If". What if I find a better job? What if the neighborhood turns seedy? And the worst one: What if the furnace or water heater goes bad? Luckilly, the last one is an easy fix with a home warranty. I pay less than $500 a year and I only pay $50 for any repair. So far I've gotten a new water heater, completely new plumbing in the bathroom shower because the hot water wouldn't shut off, terra cotta roof tiles replaced and a leaky fridge repaired in three years and I've paid less than 2 grand out of pocket, labor included. If you are pretty sure of your stabillity and you get a home warranty like I have, there is no reason you should be renting.

I don't mean to change the topic, but the reason I wanted to post today was to put my 2 cents in about the whole torture situation. So here goes: I don't care what was done to a handful of people at gitmo if there was even a 5% chance that doing so saved hundreds of American lives. In fact, I don't really care about the torture at all. Did you happen to see the video of terrorists cuting the head off of that guy? That wasn't torture. I'm pretty sure the victim wasn't even a soldier. I think he was a journalist. Why should I care what our people did to someone who was probably involved with the war in some way, when they don't care what they do to someone just reporting about it? There are no rules to war as much as people would like to believe. You can't make something as barbaric as war into something civilized by making "rules".

The whole torture thing in the media is just a slight of hand anyway. They want you to care about this subject. They want you to be afraid of "H1N1". They want you to strongly take a side on the gay marriage issue. If you have taken an emotional interest in any of those things, you are libel to not notice that your country has been taken over by government years ago and they are now going to start removing your freedoms under the guise of equality and safety.

  12. "You can't make something as barbaric as war into something civilized by making "rules"." Parker, well put.

Back to the other discussion, I think that since I'm not so sure about staying here, renting is the best option for me. Plus a house is just a scarey deal for me. I'm used to moving quite a bit (thank you Army). I want to pay my last months rent and go, without having to worry about selling a house. The simpler, the better.

Other topic, maybe I'll just wait to go see G.I.Joe, like when it's on DVD? I used to love that show. Now, since I'm not a complete Star Trek fan, I'll be seeing that this weekend. Yeap, I'm in it for the new Capt. Kirk.

  13. I heard the "G.I. Joe" in the movie isn't even American. They said the movie wouldn't play well internationally. It might have just been a rumor, but I heard they were going to be Danish or something. I'm pretty much impartial to the whole "remake" film culture. It's pretty much hit or miss, though usually miss. I liked Transformers aside from the fact that it was a long GM commercial. If it sticks to the same characters and storylines, a remake usually isn't too bad. I heard they are coming out with another Ghostbuster movie with the original cast. I will see that movie.
