  2. Robby - double wrong on the QOTWs.
Westboro Baptist Church is one of the most f'd up groups ever. There are plenty of organizations that put only white kids in college: banks, the Ivy League, Penn State... UNCF is a good cause. Minorities are grossly under-represented in academics.

    I miss Conan already.

  5. MAN! I meant to answer QOTW2 on Sunday! I knew it was South Korea. John and I have both been there, so I kind of laugh a little when I hear him talking about the place. GO CAMP PAGE! MEDEVAC IS DA BOMB!

Sarah Palin and God's plan? Really, keep it to yourself woman! Did she just forget the whole humble thing? She's got her own show now, great. Just what the heck this indie needs. After being subjected to Glen Beck for 5 minutes in the locker room at the gym, I'm ready to consider that Fox News should just go away. Dave, I'm serious, I want that 5 minutes back!

  9. Wow, John! Thanks for all the props - that we are smart, thought about having a kid, planed out our life, went about our lives in a very mythological way... I hope that I can live up to all this!

If I would not have been able to find a job in Maine, we would have been eligible to get WIC for formula and food for our family - and we would have probably gotten it. I have friends in Jon's program that did get WIC for a while to help them out. It's a great program to support woman and children.

Involuntary sterilization is wrong. Who is to decide if a person should be sterilized. (Why didn't that smart doctor go and sterilize the men who fathered her children!) How does this "smart" doctor know wat kind of mother that she is. Just because she is on welfare does not determine her ablity to raise children. LOTS of people are on welfare and are good parents who just need some help for a while. Sure there are peopel who abuse the system, but to permanently take away a women's ability to ever have children is not right. That doctor should be fired and lose his license. As a former child welfare worker, you would be surprised to learn who is abusive to children... it's not all people on welfare.

I fully support giving the depo shot to any woman who does not want to have children.

And there are lots of restrictions put of welfare recipients. Being on welfare is a hard life. Thanks for making a comment that it's hard to make policy decision when you are dealing with acutal people and families.

  10. Well since nobody took the time to write about the most important topic, I will!

Billy Corgan....man, what a fall from grace for this guy. I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to pause for a minute from writing this and put some Smashing Pumpkins on just to remind me of the heights he spiraled down from. BRB!!

Ok, I'm back. Went with the obvious choice. Siamese Dream was the album that simultaneously catapulted Corgan and his team from clubs to stadiums and introduced the world to the possibility of art and honesty in rock n roll that hadn't been witnessed since the days of The Joshua Tree. Call it what you want---alternative, geek rock, emo (actually, though providing the impetus for the Pumkins sound, emo was born from post-punk roots and the Pumpkins used loud/quiet dynamic so prized in that community in a way that truly expressed the emotion in the music). Corgan was simply pouring art out of himself through and through.

Problem was that he always took himself too seriously and his ego blossomed before he even became popular. To this day he says in interviews that he taught all of his band mates with the exception of Jimmy Chamberlain how to play their instruments. Are you kidding me? I mean that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the guy.

I was crazy for the Smashing Pumpkins. Something truly resonates inside me every time I hear that guitar rip through on songs like Soma. And I loved Mellon Collie as much as everything that came before it. But if I have to be honest I kind of lost them when Adore came out. They were ahead of their time and it took me a few years to appreciate what he was trying to accomplish there.

Then he completely freaked when Machina came along and decided to break the group up and in the process pissing off everybody in his way. His selfish prideful streak blazed a path that he wouldn't be able to pull himself away from. We all hoped that it would work itself out. And it almost did.

As excited as I was to actually score a ticket to the second night of their residency at the Orange Peel in Asheville and hear Billy Corgan and his reformed Smashing Pumpkins play, i couldn't help but think about James I'ha and D'arcy. That night Corgan and his new team of glam rock weirdos played all the songs perfectly (with help from Lassie Foundation guitarist Jeff Schroeder!! I nearly passed out), and some of the new stuff wasn't half bad. But at the end of the day it was just a lonely bald headed freak on a stage sucking as much as he could out of his fans.

Now, all that to say...Jessica Simpson and Billy Corgan may not be as different as we might assume. Yes, I would expect a lot more from the guy who so completely changed my entire world with his music (btw, I f'ing hate when people say stuff like that but for me it was totally true. Music was everything to the awkward chubby Jonathan back in 8th grade and it got me through a lot of shit), but this really just makes sense when you line it up with all the other ridiculous garbage he's pulled.

So now we have two of the worlds largest ego maniacs, aside from Bin Laden and Bush, coming together to puke their vanity on each other to fulfill their needs on a level of which only folks like themselves understand.

What is most disappointing about the whole mess is that he should be writing columns for music magazines or running a label, or anything else. Corgan and I'ha should be having beers with Vedder and McCready, Bono and the Edge, and Jagger and Richards. Nope, instead he writes this crap on his blog---http://billycorgan.livejournal.com/.

But no, he's chosen, like many a man before him, to go with the t&a. But have you seen that girl lately? Good Lord!

ugghh......i just downloaded the latest stuff from smashingpumpkins.com and it's great. He finally channeled Bowie completely.

    He ain't perfect I guess.

  11. "So now we have two of the worlds largest ego maniacs, aside from Bin Laden and Bush, coming together to puke their vanity on each other to fulfill their needs on a level of which only folks like themselves understand." So true Jon. Apparently they are on a level of ego even Kanye West can only dream of. Corgan has worked with her in the studio some as well. I can't wait to hear what a mash-up of 'Zero' and 'These Boots Were Made For Walkin' will sound like. I'm guessing utter shit. I wasn't near as into them as you, but everything pre-Adore still is rock awesomeness, and will always be.

Kate - I guess you are theoretically correct that it is wrong to sterilize a woman. However, after 9 babies, nobody took away her right to have some. A lot of smart people just like you and Jon would be happy to just have 1 or 2 healthy little kids running around - that you could actually support! The problem we have to address is the dependency culture that welfare perpetuates. My mom received food stamps from my birth until age 9. She also worked 35+ hours a week, (at a job she hated and had to walk to), and had to pay for my childcare. This doesn't make her a hero, but she also did not try to get welfare to get her a car, an education at Penn State Shenango, or the myriad other abuses that I have heard of and personally witnessed. My mom, as well as the people you mentioned, needed help. They don't need, deserve, or in best case scenario even want a free ride forever. I see it as a policy reform issue, and it's because of these 9,10,11 kid having people that the regular people who need a hand get stigmatized and humiliated for no reason. Getting WIC for a couple years to support a child while your husband is in med. school is a far cry from popping out a 9th child just because you know it's all paid for by the state and you can go back to your life with no consequences and a bigger check. I realize that rich people can be dicks too, but let's be honest. Of those 9 kids, how many have the same dad? Four. Then three with another. Then 2 again...

I partially blame our cultures insistence that having kids fulfills a person, and if you have no kids, there is something "wrong" with you. Any two people can have sex and produce a kid. I've been having sex half my life now, yet no kids. Why? Because I'm not ready. I still get blackout drunk sometimes. I'm still flaky. I'm still poor. I'm not some kind of genius, I just have the f'ing common sense to not bring a kid into a shitty situation. People who have no sense sometimes need it forced on them. If I don't pay taxes, I go to jail. If I speed, I get a ticket. Yet I can produce as many humans as physically possible, and when Jon Woodhouse becomes a doctor and gets paid, he'll buy my kids Nikes along with his own? I don't need to be told welfare is a hard life, because I've lived it. And because I lived it, I will see to it that no child of mine, ever, ever has to know what that feels like.

  12. I think the part that bothers me the most is that the doctors DIDN'T have a consent form. People have to sign all sorts of forms for surgeries and this should have been no different. It's not up to the doctor to make that call when her life was in no immediate danger, so I fully back her up taking them to court. Do I think she's gone a bit far with nine kids? Maybe I do, but in the article she stated who has fathered these children and the living second father is involved.

I'm just in shock that the doctors took matters into their own hands. This could open alot of issues now.
