ReplyDeleteI think Pat definitely beats Rush. Though both use religion and politics as a mighty weapon of mass communication destruction, Pat and his CBN cronies hurt me and offend me more on a personal level than Rush. He's got this stupid persona of "I'm a tender old Grandpa so I just get to say whatever I want!" Also, along those same lines of people being the cause of bad things happening to themselves, I'm really f'ing tired of all the people out there who go around saying that homeless people and people on welfare should go get a job like everybody else. I've never met anybody who spoke like that who actually truly knows and have lived through that level of depravity. Sure you're always going to have people to abuse the system but at the risk of sounding cliche...every breath we have is a gift and we rely on other people throughout our whole lives. I'm guess I'm just a fed up God-loving Liberal. I'm not quite sure how Jesus got sucked into the selfish, arrogant, prideful world of the conservative Right but I really want Him back. When Jesus said "feed my sheep" I don't think He meant feed them once and if they don't get a job and take advantage of you then stop feeding everybody. Nope...He simply said feed my sheep.
ReplyDeleteParker with a comeback to the boards!
ReplyDeleteJB, you are onto something. Jesus did get co-opted by the right. Maybe it's because anyone who isn't in church can't love America as much as a Christian... not sure how they stole away possibly the most liberal guy ever. Weird logic considering what the founding fathers really said about religion. If more Christians were like you and Dave and Marty Johnson, and you got air time on Fox News, and all the old freaks like Robertson died, then maybe Christ could get back some of His hippie/yuppie audience. Perhaps Jesus could commission the DMB or Kings of Leon to write Him a new theme song to really get to that all-powerful 22-30, upper-middle class demographic that He has lost. Maybe a cameo on Gossip Girl too! Jesus needs a full-on media blitz or else on the same people who have ruined His message will continue to falsely spew it out.
There were three months last year, Nov, Sept and May. You can look at the blog history and see it as it's sorted by month! So, Parker gets it!!!
ReplyDeleteJon! I think that the GLL's may be soon in revolt. Taking bits of here say and reading it off like scripture on the air is really starting to piss a lot of folks off. I suppose that pacts with the devil just make for better TV, and Pat's main goal is to raise money. It's a great fundraiser, so how can it be wrong???
Marty Johnson for president!
In our school district the gifted program has historically been populated with those whose IQ on any of the standard tests, delivered by a school psychologist on the recommendation of the teacher, was 130+. Like you,John, they were pulled out one day a week for class that involved delving further into those higher order thinking skills than their regular class was doing. Granted, many of those "regular" kids could have done them and the pendulum has now swung the other way so that we are including more of that for them.Along with the recognition of multiple intelligences and types of giftedness. As a parent of "gifted" kids I was recruited to be the advisor for our "Odyssey of the Mind" team (let's not get the right-wing pentecostals talking on that one) where their minds WERE challenged. It was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOn another note,I agree that we as a school should be able to put the students in the classes where they will be most challenged. A couple of my son's "gifted" friends totally bombed high school and their parents let them take all general track classes. Maybe I was lucky my kids didn't rebel more than they did -- but somehow I think setting the tone in the home is a lot like setting the tone in the classroom. There is acceptable behavior and there is unacceptable behavior. In high school failure was not acceptable. In college it wasn't either but what we don't know won't hurt us til we eventually find out.Anyway, back to my point, the parents are the ones at our school who often do not encourage their children to challenge themselves enough. The parents sometimes say things like, "I just want him to have fun his senior year." Makes me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think by the time my parents got me out of the house and into the army at age 21, they were just happy I didn't burn the place down. My parents had shitty parents, education-wise anyway, which led them to be shitty parents education-wise, and thus my mom didn't crack the whip and push me to live up to my potential. I was on my own in the education department until Dave's mom said "You're smart. Stay in school. If you get a 4.0 I'll put it on the fridge." I was 25 years old...
ReplyDeleteIf god loving liberals (GLLs, nice) are going to revolt, they can start by not broadcasting on cable, wearing $3,500 Armani suits, and "preaching" in front of spinning globes that cost $10,000. I'm not able to speak for the Jesus, but I don't think those clever little bracelets from the 90s would suggest that he would do any of that stuff.
Maybe a little humility in the Christian community would go a long way. Like maybe all those arrogant kids at the Jam House (who are a metaphor for telvangelists in this rant) who said I'd surely burn in hellfire for listening to Hot FM 101 in my car. Funny how life swings toward them being single parents and me being a GHL atheist heathen bastard (or how they end up Republican congressmen banging same-sex interns and partners in airport bathrooms)... I've never fathered a bastard child though, so score one for me. Perhaps I'm bitter, but so many of the "nice" people in my life who "love" me so much and "worship Jesus" have turned out to be frauds who couldn't care less about me or my life until their guilt about my mom's death or us not being friends leads them to contact me once or twice a decade. I feel every single second that I cared about religion was a colassal waste of time, effort, energy, blood, sweat, and tears. True, the 4 or 5 guys that I consider lifelong(ish) friends were met in a building that supposedly housed a god of some sort (mostly a god of old pricks who were more judgemental than any god could ever be), but even so, those friendships being the one glimmer of positivity that came from it, I regret it all. I also regret not playing football in high school and my last 3 or 4 haircuts, which gives you an idea of the level of importance I place on regret.
I hope this clears up my opinion on Pat Robertson and his deity.
I enjoy listening to the show. I really appreciated John and Parker showing up for dad's calling hours, THANKS! As well as Fred and Dennis for coming out and having a drink to celebrate dad's life. It was nice seeing everyone. I find it weird that Dave bakes so much, but I'm looking forward to enjoying some of his wares in 2 weeks when I go visit him!
ReplyDeleteI love this show.
ReplyDeletePat, what a way to be a jerky. Seriously, you have to kick a people when they're already down? Have to agree with John on the feed my sheep thing. I'm not right or left wing, I'm in the middle with ALOT of questions that are constantly left unanswered.
Gifted kids need more to push them. Plain and simple. My brother is pretty much genius level and did Odyssey of The Mind. He loved it, but our high school really didn't do much else to push him outside of that. Of course, there's more to it than just that, but he pretty much just barely graduated.
Hey, Pilots have checklists before they take off, why shouldn't surgeons?
I have been told by no less than three people that there should be a John Show... Dave, you have been warned.
ReplyDeleteIf I would have not been lazy, had more involved parents, and gone to a real school, I'd be writing for Rolling Stone with Parker as an editor. We started out f'd and we f'd ourselves with our attitudes and lifestyles. Not everyone is born on third and gets credit for a triple like W. and Paris Hilton... oh well. I like to think that it all made me the awesome man I am today.
Also... it is weird that Dave bakes so much. I have theories on this that I may delve into on this week's exciting episode.
