Potluck receptions are big here in TX. It's a good idea cause it cuts down on the cost. Okay, the tux thing, why not just go for a simple tux? It's a tux for pete's sake! Dresses are another thing. Set a color and let the bridesmaids pick the best dress. As long as they don't show up the bride, who the eff cares? My best friend's wedding had black for the dresses and the women got to pick out their dresses. I'm certain that it costs alot less money.
ReplyDeleteGood ideas. As long as the couple tries to keep in mind that their friends may not have a bunch of $$$ to throw around and keep that in mind, then it'll be better. I'll take your word for it on the dresses!
ReplyDeleteWell, on the tux thing, I am getting married in about a month. I have decided that I am going to collect the tuxes myself after the wedding and have them returned the next Monday (most tux shops are not open on Sundays). To do this, I am going to pay the deposit ($20 per tux times 10 tuxes = $200) which I will receive when they are returned. The guys in my wedding will be paying $98 for the tuxes, which I think is about what I have payed for the other three weddings that I have been in. I would love to pay for these tuxes myself, but sadly I don't have $1000 extra to pay for these. On the subject of the wedding gifts, I plan on getting all of my groomsmen something that is based off of what I think they would like. For example, when I was in Don's wedding (yes, I was in it Dave) he got me a box of golf balls that lasted me a couple years. I really enjoyed this. On the other hand, I was in a friends wedding who got me a money clip with my initials engraved on it. How many times have I used it? NONE but, oh well. The best man liked money clips so they got everyone one. The third wedding that I was in, I did not get anything. So, this week I decided that I am going to try and get everyone in my wedding party something that they will actually use.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go and charge some premium bird seed now!
Actually, the wedding is this friday. We have cleared up the Tux issue. The bride's sister is going to take them back. I do have an add on though. Tom W. (from Philly, for anonymity) was going to be in the wedding. He dropped out because he got a DUI or something that is draining his cash. So, the groom asked 2 shirty Curtie to take the empty slot. To woo him, the bride and groom took him to dinner and they are paying for his tux, but not mine. This doesn't even piss me off anymore since I have been made aware that both the bride and groom are highly inconsiderate.
ReplyDeleteP.S. We wouldn't drill for oil in the desert, because the bleeding heart liberals don't want to destroy the "Natural beauty" of the barren wasteland.
ReplyDeleteI just OD on the Dave and John Show by listening to three hours…
ReplyDeleteFirst, Dave, do not buy a TV. All the cool kids got rid of their TVs and are watching Hulu.
Second, I will pay for all the tuxes at your wedding Dave. Hope the E works. Zayden will be a cute ring bearer in about 3+ years.
Third, John, I would also like to see through walls and fly.
Every time you said Segway (which was a lot last week) I think of those crazy electric people movers.
Have you seen “Who killed the electric car”?
I need a new digital camera that takes some short videos. Any recommendations?
AHA! Kate is awesome as she backs up the not buying a TV thing.
ReplyDeleteIf Dave does not buy a TV in 2009 [by football season (regular season, not pre)] I will end our 17 year friendship and start 'FM 666 - The John Show.' The sole purpose of this show will be to discredit Dave as a person, slander him, post fake pics of him in compromising positions, and force him into exile. I will then steal his identity, systematically becoming him and living his life as I have always thought he should. He will binge drink, watch hours of Scrubs, and become a womanizing a-hole that nobody likes. Then, and only then, will my quest be complete. OR... he can pony up a couple hundred for a little flat screen and get basic cable... The ball's in your court Dave.
ReplyDelete10 people in a wedding party, 10 tuxes... that's a lot. At least you're returning them and paying a deposit. That's way better than most, so that's cool. Nobody's gonna admit or say this, so I will; weddings are ridiculous. Some people can't even have them because their love isn't "real" enough, some people only have them because they're too scared or lazy to continue being single, and even the "good" weddings I have been to still have a 45% chance of lasting more than 3 years... hate to be the downer here, but it's an expensive show that will probably have a sequel. It may even be a trilogy. As a hopeless romantic, I love the idea. As an optimist, I hope for the best for the people I care about that get married. Regardless of a couple hundred bucks coming or going, I hope our generation can change marriage (among the myriad things our parents ruined) and swing the stats towards family, happiness, and love.
Also... have an open bar!
Or BYOB. I'd be happier to bring my own beer because then I know I'll get the beer I want. Shinder Blonde or Bud Light.
ReplyDeleteNice...the frequency of the beast. I'd listen. I don't know the whole story, but it seems like Dave should have your TV John, since you sold him one. So I guess it's your fault he doesn't have a TV. I think it's cool he doesn't have one in a way. I waste a lot of time watching tv because I'm hooked, but Dave doesn't have to be. On a side note, I love flight of the conchords, but I read an article earlier this year where Bret stated that the second season will probably be the last.
ReplyDeleteI should have been a little more clear about the 10 tuxes. I don't have 10 guys in my wedding party (though I have seen it). One tux is for me, two for the fathers, one for DJ my ring bearer, two for ushers, and four for men in the wedding party.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we are having an open bar. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the timely wedding advice. For my wedding, I will be picking up the tuxes when they are ready, delivering them to the groomsmen, and dropping them back off the day after the wedding. However, I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask someone else to drop them off or pick them up. I am following the tradition of having the groomsmen pay for their tux rentals (although if money was an issue for one of them, I would pay for it if they asked me). Like Nick, I'm going to try and get some decent gifts (no money clips, mugs, or business card holders). Weddings are very expensive (I'm easily in over 5000 and I'm hardly paying for any of it), so I'm thankful my friends are willing to help me out with some of the costs. In Parker's case, this Log guy seems like a jerk though. He's lucky you don't just drop out.
ReplyDeleteI don't have as negative a view of marriage as you do, John. I do lack first-hand experience however. I do think that weddings are ridiculous though. I don't see the need to blow thousands of dollars (avg. wedding costs 20000) on something that you'll barely have time to enjoy (and yes, unfortunately something which ultimately may have to be repeated) inviting 100's of people that you might barely even know. I think a better system would be to have more lavish parties as the marriage ages. Save that money and have a 10 year blowout or something.
ReplyDeleteI would never drop out of his wedding because I have known him since way back. One of my major pet peeves is the lack of common sense. I hate to keep bagging on him, but it is just so easy. For instance, they registered at target. When I went online to see what they had registered for, there was a list of at least 10 digital cameras. One costing as much as $500!!!! They can't really think someone is going to get them a $500 gift when they aren't getting free food in return. As for the wedding gifts, I figured that I should get my guys something that cost about as much as they had to pay for their tuxes. I got them personalized football jerseys of their favorite NFL teams. Actually, buck wanted an Amsterdam Anchor's jersey from NFL Europe. It just seems to me that they were doing me a favor by being in my wedding, so I needed to do everything I could to make it as convenient for them as possible.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Dave TV issue. Whether he watches TV or Hulu it is just as addictive. Some people snort coke, some people smoke crack. It's all the same thing just different ways to deliver it. And I would totally support AM666. If you had a blog for it I would make it a point to swear and share all of the fun sins that I try to do.
I am a bitter guy in some ways, so I apologize for totally ripping weddings. A lot of it is just to be funny. Dave listens to waaayyy more podcasts than I watch TV. TV is relatable, it's part of society, it is American culture. We go to work on Friday and talk about the Office, a sporting event, South Park, or whatever we've been watching during the week. It's just a way we relate to each other. It is cool in a way to unplug from the bullshit parts of TV like advertising and ridiculous programming, but I don't think it's a moral stand for Dave. Maybe it is, I'll ask him on the show this week. If you're going to listen to dudes talk about video games for 3 hours a week, why not catch SNL if you're home on Saturday night, or see a show on a screen bigger than 15" with your facebook and iTunes minimized right underneath. In my opinion, the computer takes people out of society more than TV ever will, and it makes social awkwardness seem trendy and hip. World of Warcraft, anyone?
ReplyDeleteHahahaha ok. I'm sold. Get a damn TV, Dave!
ReplyDeleteNooooooooooooooooooooo! Not World of Warcraft. There are several guys I work with who are WAY into that. It's also all they talk about.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! OK... Just a pointer to anyone out there, if you click on Parker's name, we are not accountable for what comes up. It could be... ANYTHING!!!
ReplyDeleteKATE - I don't know much about cameras to tell you the truth. Mine is about three years old and sucks batteries dry but I'm not getting anything else in the meantime.
JOHN - Don't be a dork-on. Remember, if you're trying to take over my life you'd call it 1010011010, which is binary for the mark of the beast. And, there's a windmill in my beard, your argument is invalid.
JARROD - Anniversaries are a MUCH better reason to celebrate. high five.
World of Warcraft is not really a game... It's a social network with a game underneath it. It's kind of like Facebook with one of those Mobsters game, except that the game is much more involving. Maybe we could talk about that a little bit sometime.
I think the computer is more of a time suck than TV ever will be. At least when you're watching a TV show you like you can just sit back and relax with it. If I'm stumbling the net the moment I get bored with the current page I just go to the next one, a random bizarre assault to my senses that is more detrimental to my life than any show would be.
I think I'm just lazy.
DAVE OUT
I think the first link I put was supposed to be Parkeronyourmom.com, but it turns out it isn't a real site. Just a search engine advertizing she-males. For the record, I do not endorse She-males.
ReplyDeletehey a few thoughts on gas prices and summer vacations - I don't think that folks are changing their vacation plans due to the increase in gas cost for that in particular trip. When you look at how gas increases affect the whole it makes everybody rethink their budget. It's not just the gas you buy direct from the pump - it's also the increase gas costs that get passed onto consumers from every angle. Shipping costs of the raw material to the manufacturer, freight costs from the manufacturer to the distributor, onto the retailer....all of the costs add up and we find ourselves in the current inflated craziness, all that tacked onto the collapse / bailout proceedings and most folks not knowing if they'll have a job next week or not. It's just not a good time for anybody to get out there blow money. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteGas prices effect just about everything. Groceries anyone? What about dairy farmers? Hmmm, I'd like to see Dave and John talk about that one.
ReplyDeleteThis past trip to Austin was a bit easier on my wallet because gas was cheaper. However, it's still cheaper to drive than it is to fly there and I have a truck. Plus, I get a nice view of all the windmill farms on my way through Abilene. We're in the perfect setting for windmill farms because we have so much wind! It's not so great for bike riding somedays.
Oh yeah, another idea. Roller Derby!
