Corrections:

- UMD stands for Universal Media Disc, not Mini Disc like John said.

- Buena Park, CA, where John recorded from this week, is in Orange County, NOT L.A.! This is important when appraising homes (and when Josh and Priscilla want to be from Orange County-LOL). L.A. is about 100 yards away.

We got to over 100 FB group members! Now we want 1,000.

HBO - Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
Banning sports in P.E. that have "clear-cut winners and losers" - dodgeball, musical chairs, even jumping rope without a rope?! Do kids need to learn to lose? Can good come from a little minor gym class humiliation?

Entertainment - Star Trek, Wolverine, big summer movies out now

Scrubs - over for now, possible spin-offs, Braff's interview about it

Music - Pepper. Slightly Stoopid. Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" album turns 20! I don't like the Crue, but it's strange that an album I remember - from it's release, to videos, to my cousin's cassette copy, is two decades old. By no means a classic though...

Sports
-Penguins playoff vs. Capitals. Crosby vs. Ovechkin, arguably two best players in hockey. Monday night's game they each had a hat trick, only 1 of 7 goals not scored by one of them. Lemieux/Gretzky? Hockey needs this for casual/playoff fans like me to watch regular season games. I'm into it! Pens up 3 games to 2.
-Brett Favre - released from Jets, not ruling out comeback with Vikings, maybe Packers. Working with a trainer... starting to become a sad glory hound. Comebacks like this, Jordan, Deion Sanders taint the legacy a little bit.
-LeBron James gets NBA MVP, led team in pts, rebs, blocks, steals, assists. NBA Playoffs in full swing, baseball a month in and the Pirates are worst in their division, again, as usual. The dark period between NFL seasons is decent this year. Pretty clear that pro football is America's favorite. NASCAR may sell more junk and merch, but few aren't diehards. I'm not anti-racing, but I'll never really watch more than a few laps a year.
-NFL Draft - Steelers picks

  1. Man, kids need to learn how to lose and win. If they don't, they can't handle it later on in life.

Dave, DON'T GET A TV! We didn't have one for a while and it was nice.

    QOTW guess: 100

  3. Dear Dave,

Get a TV. Do not get a cat. Go out for a drink in a shirt purchased after 2006. Talk to us, because you are employed, not fat, and pretty cool.

    Sincerely,
    All the Single Ladies

    Advice Taken.

  5. Dave--That is the beauty of living on a houseboat, you wouldn't have to visit me I could visit you....while still in my house.

QOTW guess: A record 115 downloads.

  6. John, the only time I've spent in CA was at Ft. Irwin, so I'll take a pass on visiting.

  7. About the really fast camera (and probably only to the interest of Dave): For macroscopic objects, it would take a lot of energy to move them around enough to need a camera which took so many pictures per second. However, microscopic objects can move around quite a bit over a small amount of time using a small amount of energy. For example, I once used a top of the line camera (300 fps at the time) to record the motion of tiny particles that moved around in a fish tank full of water that was only being agitated by a fan blade. It worked pretty well, but a faster camera would have been better. So you can imagine the precision needed to record even smaller particles moving with even greater energy. And I assume that is mostly what this camera would be used for. Last year at some point, some scientists used a high speed camera to record a hummingbird flying which was really cool (and I think they used a 3000 fps camera), so there are some more interesting applications.

  8. Jarrod, I'm going to reply so John doesn't have to, why didn't you use that top of the line camera to put some pics of yourself on you networking sights!!!????!!!! Sorry. Had to do it. You're right about the hummingbird footage though, it was super sweet.

  9. Well, this was in 2002 and I didn't have facebook yet (did it exist then?). Plus it was attached to a microscope and owned by the government and was really expensive and I wasn't allowed to touch it. I was allowed to shoot flies with a dangerous laser though, so it was a pretty fun experience.

  10. About the camera, there is a show on Discovery called Time Warp where they use high speed cameras to look at everyday things. The website is http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/time-warp/time-warp.html It's pretty cool. They showed what happens to a water balloon when it is popped and it was sweet to be able to see how the water stays in the form of the balloon for just a split second before it looses the shape. They also do some pretty funny things too like what happens to your face when you get punched.
For the Question Of The Week I am going to guess 120 downloads.

  11. Dave, how do I make the website above a link? I should probably know this, but I do not. :-(

  14. I also like to touch my public parts in private places. It makes me feel naughty.

  15. I guess 82 for the question of the week. John, you probably know this already, but I just read that scrubs is going to be renewed. It seems like a big risk for abc to renew a show whose stars are all leaving, so maybe they know something that we don't.
