So, why do people have babies? Were you guys suggesting that it's just a routine aspect of life? Because, if so, I thoroughly agree. In fact, society as a whole would benefit from a smaller population.
ReplyDeleteThe conversation was interesting enough, but, I wonder, can you guys discuss the economic aspect of reproduction and having kids?
The shows always discuss the health care bill, and I think it was mentioned that the bill would not cover abortion related expenses. I'm disappointed at the bill. I think that covered abortion expenses would perhaps be more beneficial to society than free health care for the flu. What do you guys think?
...
For the insurance companies, abortions are a win. For the cost of an abortion, an insurance company can save from years of expenses relating to the child. It costs a LOT more for an insurance company to pay to help raise a child than to terminate a pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteThere was a section in Freakanomics (i think) when they were talking about decreased crime rates happening 12-15 years after abortions were allowed in a certain area. If a person cannot afford to raise a child, it is to the greater good of the society to allow that woman to either have an abortion or give them the resources to raise the child. Unfortunately, we do neither.
I am disappointed in the bill mostly because there is no public option. The abortion issue, for me, is that abortions will happen regardless of cost or legality. People have the right to be safe when they undergo a procedure, and morality is not a state issue.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the economic factors of parenting, it's fiscally insane to have a kid if you don't pull down six figures between a couple. Sure, basic needs can be met with less, but who the hell wants to go through life with only basic needs being met? When I was a kid, I had to wear hand-me-down basketball shoes. They were always a size too big, I was humiliated, and getting ridiculed was a factor when I gave up the sport. The "little" things like disposable income go a long way in parenting, and I'm not seeing a lot of it with the people I know.
I think a lot of people have kids out of routine and expectations, but what's more problematic is when kids are created to "save" a relationship or because one (or both) of the parents wants to feel love from something. If that's the case, I say get a dog and a social life.
Religion is not blameless in the baby booms and population explosions either. What better way to recruit for your business/cult than to physically create replacement members for those who are dying? Putting that whole "be fruitful and multiply" shit in the bible is a nice touch. Really makes people feel like they're doing god's work... just like in Iraq!
So... kids are innocent victims in all of this. Parents suck ass. No matter who you are, or who you think you are, we don't need another you.
Having said that, I don't rule it out. Because the world could use another me.
Dave won't let me call in because i have not graduated yet...Racist...
ReplyDeleteBecause you cannot cook Dave face it...
2+2=5 is wrong...we all know it equals chair...
Idiot this week im going with Dave because I feel sorry for him...
As for the solution I agree games have gotten easier but I play a lot of games with unforgiving rules like Modern Warfare 2..you lose you lose...you win you get cussed out by a 12 year old...till this day im still proud that the first game i ever beat was a game called Black for the original xbox that was a truly unforgiving game the levels were 3 hours long and no check points and also ungodly hard...
Green day rock band...Really Dave...no...I will not let Green day rock band win anything...I am changing the game of the week even though I can't change the site...The Game of the week this week is Assassin's Creed 2...For anyone who like history and conspiracy its the game for you the game takes place during the Italian Renaissance and looks amazing If you did not play the first one go get it from a bargain bin then go get the second one you will love it...To continue my rant about you posting green day rock band as game of the week...I have nothing bad to say about green day it is more aimed towards the rock band series...as a person who spends a lot of time looking through the game market place it is way to over saturated with rock band games...They literally come out with a new one every week and it just spams the market...
sorry for not commenting in a while but I have not been near a computer during the weekends because I have been working and have not been listening....
The clip of the Bill Maher quote on parents/teachers that I was referring to was:
ReplyDelete"Just having books in the house makes kids smarter... if your home is adorned with Hummel dolls, DVDs, and bleeding Jesus's, congratulations! You've just given your child the gift of "duh." - Bill Maher
So true.
To start at the top, I completely agree with what Bill Maher said. I don't have the most experience in education, but the little that I do, I have definitely noticed how the parents' involvement is huge when it comes to the success of the student. You can always tell the difference between the student who gets up every morning and spends time with a parent and the parent makes sure that they did all of their school work, studied, did some reading, ect. compared to the parent who doesn't care. It is important that parents get involved, but the lazy parents won't. It is a sad thing, but I don't know how to change it. Any ideas on that one?
ReplyDeleteDave, have you tried cutting the bread a little thicker to see if it catches on fire. If it still lights up, then it is your bread, evidently the companies have something to stop this from happening, if it doesn't, you are probably cutting it just a little too thin. Or, like John said, you might just have a crappy toaster.
Speaking of Dave, you are a complete JERK! I can't believe that you dissed me like that! Just kidding, I didn't care at all. I figured you wanted to spend time with your cousin, I kind of felt like an ass just inviting myself over to see you. Don't feel bad, WE COOl!
On becoming a parent. I still don't know exactly how I feel about it. I know that I had a great life growing up (sure there were times that I was pissed at my parents, but who isn't) and I want to be able to do that for a child myself. On the other hand, I think about how much it costs just to raise a child and I know that Jess and me are doing OK now financially, but if we added a little me into the equation, we would be out of luck. We have been discussing the issue for some time now (before we got married) and we are still undecided. Time will tell how we truly feel, but I am definitely looking into both sides of the subject.
I would strike if they took away my beer!
I need to look into the solution of the week. I have grown up playing games, but I never beat them. I would play until I got either bored, or they became too hard for me. A game that I am currently playing that is very unforgiving is Ninja Gaiden II. It is a very hard game, and I don't know how many times I played the 1st level before I actually made it through alive. Games are becoming too easy. Take for example, the New Super Mario Bros. for Wii. If you die in a level 6 times in a row, the game will play through it for you if you wish and then you can go onto the next level without any penalty, except loosing the lives that you lost and you can't get a special star at the end.
I'm going to agree with Robby on this one about the Green Day Rock Band. I like to play Rock Band, but it is getting a little crazy with all the games. I don't think they need a whole game based off of Green Day, or any band for that matter. With all of these games; Rock Band, Guitar Hero, ect. you can download just about any popular song that you want. If you want to play all Green Day songs, then download them off of the network. It would probably run about the same amount of money, but you can play them with all the songs you currently have.
LOTW 2 Peat!! Woot!!
QOTW:
Part 1: You and Your Heart by Jack Johnson
Part 2: The album, To the Sea, comes out June 1st, 2010
Nick Sun gets it again! He might have a Jordan or Kobe-esque 3-peat on his hands!
ReplyDeleteI have had to overcome a lot because of my parents lack of discipline and motivation. Luckily my genius-level brilliance and devastatingly handsome looks took me pretty far in life, or I'd really be screwed. Chad and Jean's parenting of me at 25 was the best I'd ever had, unless you count the Jesus brainwashing I got from age 2-18...
If a kid is motivated, s/he can overcome bad odds. It just sucks that some kids are up against so much negativity that it's an uphill battle for them and their teachers for much or all of K-12. I do think a good-to-great teacher and a moderately motivated kid can undo a lot of shitty parenting, but again, it's tough and they shouldn't have to. Goes back to what we often talk about - why people have kids and if they ever should. I would say of the youngsters I know, several were born into "good' situations (decent money, stable home life), maybe another few into "ideal" situations (ie. parents have good jobs/are normal and ready). That means there are kids just in my small sphere of known kids that will have a hard time simply because their parents couldn't be bothered with a condom or pill, or who got married just to have sex.
Guitar Lessons > Guitar Hero. Start a band, don't "play" one. G,C,D chords = rock stardom! Or at least some fun with friends...
"Just having heterosexual sex in the house makes kids straighter... if your home is adorned with Blow-up dolls, Porn DVDs, and bleeding Vaginas, congratulations! You've just given your child the gift of "Heterosexuality." - Bill Maher (Switching only a few words). It's the same basic argument of nature v. nurture. Intelligence or sexuality. The only books in my house were romance novels, TV guides and an almost entire set of Grocery Store Encyclopedias. My dad couldn't stay awake long enough for an episode of Cops let alone read anything that wasn't a telephone book or a menu. Just this past year I have read two books on hypothetical physics written by Michio Kaku, one of the smartest men ever born on American soil in my opinion. I average 3-5 books a month, depending on the subject and length of course. Just the opposite of Maher's quote is also true. I am sure there are plenty of rich kids who may have had a plenty of books and threw their life away to H or whatnot. It's these type of statements that further the stereotype.
ReplyDeleteAs for having a child, I feel the wife and I made the right decision. I want someone else to mow the lawn someday. There are some crappy chores I can have the boy do. We waited a few years so that we could have some fun together, but I wanted to make sure we had him before she was 35. That's the age when your chances of having a baby that doesn't ever stop drooling increases. If we had a 'tarded baby, he probably couldn't mow the lawn for me. That's counter productive. Plus, we were going to wait until we were more "Finacially stable", but we realized that probably wasn't going to happen. As we make more money, we just would have blown it on fancy things since I like shiny stuff alot.
Guitar hero.........Stupid. I don't see the point. Like John, I say take a lesson. That goes for all "Hero" games. Lame. I saw were these guys made a computer program to make music with the game guitar. That is cooler than just playing the game. Everyone should do that.
Good to see a comment from Parker. I still think Maher's argument is pretty good, although if he took a dump and put it in a Take 5 wrapper I'd probably still eat it because I basically worship him... I can think of a certain family member who thinks Jesus is all you need to think about to learn... clearly not the case. Also, many people rely solely on what they're born with or the status they're born into. Sarah Palin's kids, for example, will have tons of money but no natural ability for cognitive thinking. Whether they become bio-chemists or Playboy models will be up to them, not their super retarded MILF. At a certain point, kids need to realize that their parents are basically full of shit, and they got to a comfortable level in life and quit progressing. I was not very comfortable with the level my parents got to. (On a side note, my mom bombarded me with tons of homosexual media: Elton John, Queen, Musicals, theater and naval career encouragement, and I still came out straight). Maybe you weren't either. But Jesus cousin seems to idolize his parents, so he's just a carbon copy of them. Dave doesn't seem to mind being like his dad, so he hasn't changed much since age 12. I always want and need to change, learn, and adapt to feel alive...
ReplyDeleteI think nature vs. nurture is definitely true, but of course there are exceptions. Reading hypothetical physics is a choice you made because you are smart and want to learn, just like going to college, just like working hard enough in high school to get out. Maybe like the rest of us with dads who worked way too hard, way too many hours of the week, you are one of the few that overcame the bullshit on your own. Maybe you felt the need to be at a different place than your parents. We never really get into the "why" of things, and that's your business. But what parents do, whether its church, school, etc., will definitely be the main predictor. So maybe having an Einstein portrait on the mantle instead of a Jesus or Ben Rothlisberger will help explain why a kid likes science instead of mythology or da Stillers. Or maybe it's about personal responsibility once we become 18 and are free to choose.
At 18, we all chose college for whatever reason. My main reason was (and still is): I am not busting my ass in a 100 degree factory for 10+ hours a day to make half of what I could make sitting on my ass in air conditioning. Also, it's just "what you do," unless you want to be uncool or whatever. We did not create the flawed system, but it's just too hard to fight against and exist outside of. I tried. I tried "sticking it to the man." I ended up a 300 pound pizza boy living on Waugh Ave... not exactly the politically dissenting statement I wanted to make. My parents struggled, were broke, weren't educated, and life sucked ass. I won't do that.
There's no simple answer I guess. Everyone's so different. Compare Fred and I to the other two siblings who had the exact same upbringing, resources, etc... we're both the epitome of awesomeness. Billy is still on Waugh, and the other one is MIA.
